Why Volunteer

You can make a difference in someone else's life.
In the words of a former Charter House resident:

"Just a note to thank each and every one of you for all the help and caring you gave us during our time of need.  Never before have I met such kindness in people.  One day I hope to be the one helping out and showing how much I really appreciate all you did for us."

Volunteering might make a difference in your life.
In the words of one student volunteer:

"Working with Middlebury Community Care Coalition over the past three years has without a doubt changed my life.  Because of MCCC, I have been able to gain wonderful experiences within and outside the Middlebury community working for social justice.  I wish the organization continued success and I will miss it dearly when I leave Middlebury College."

Here are some ways you can get involved:

Staff the Charter House

Provide a critical service to the community while meeting new people. Volunteers work 3-4 hour shifts in pairs. To sign up or for more information, email mskachmar@gmavt.net or call (802) 989-3108.

The Charter House requires two staff members to be present at all times. These trained volunteers oversee house security, address resident concerns, and provide support as needed with childcare and meal preparation. Most importantly, volunteers help foster an atmosphere of community support, acceptance, and hope.

Volunteers sign up for shifts according to what works with their own schedule, and may choose to staff shifts with a friend, or to meet someone new. Most shifts last about four hours, with a few shorter shifts in the morning and early afternoon, and a longer overnight shift.

Prepare and serve Community Lunches

Food donations and baked goods are always appreciated. To donate food or volunteer as a cook/server, please email ginnypots@comcast.net or call (802) 989-7272.

Prepare and serve Community Suppers

Cooks, servers, dishwashers, musicians, and others needed every Friday afternoon/evening to put on a fun, community dinner. To get involved, email fdneuberger@middlebury.edu or call (802) 233-7588.

Farm-to-Table

If you enjoy gardening, there is much planting to do in the spring.  During the summer and early fall, some tender loving care and help with the harvest is needed.  Food distribution and preservation help is needed through the middle of the summer through the fall.  If you would like to help, please email ginnypots@comcast.net or call (802) 989-7272.

Join the "Fix it" Team for the Housing Program
